FEE FOR SERVICE - LOADING MY ACT ONTO A REMOTE SERVER

Within the next month, I plan to load ACT 2008 Premium onto a www.godaddy.com dedicated server. Before I jump into that task on my own, I am curious what it would cost for a professional to handle that task for me?  I plan to have less than 5 of us using the data base for the first year. Second year grow to 10. Probably never more than 30.  Based on what ACT is telling me, syncing to it would work well for us vs. being on-line all the time to it.

If you are in this profession and are interested, you can contact me at tbudde@onyxmoney.com.  If you are a user and have any insight, please let me know!  Thanks!

My operation:

I sell commercial lines of insurance. I get hot leads in every day. These prospects want to hear from someone ASAP. My insurance reps work remote from home.  As the leads come in, I assign them via a field in ACT for what rep it will go to. Only that rep gets the lead.

Things that I am not clear on are:

1) How well is it going to work as I, as the administrator make upgrades to the fields and/or layouts?  I will be making improvements weekly.

2) Templates.  We use MS Word. This business is document intensive. I am 100% paperless using Adobe.  I've created loads of ACT templates.  How will my reps access the templates and get new/updated templates from me?

Cash is tight. So, for now, I am looking to get the install onto the server handled. Down the road, I will interview for an ACT specialist to give me pricing of on-going support.  If that person has strong computer skills, I may have them support all computer operations (that'd be the ideal).  All done remotely.  They would be responsible for getting new reps' systems working properly and taking tech calls from the reps.  We use ACT, Outlook, Excell, Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0.

PS - I've been using ACT off and on for 20 years (started with the DOS version).  I am on the higher end of computer knowledge. Weak about servers and communications. Very good with databases,  document management, and MS Office.

Re: FEE FOR SERVICE - LOADING MY ACT ONTO A REMOTE SERVER

Thanks for the input. I just got your message today. Two days ago, I installed it on Godaddy's site. It was a piece of cake. All I had to do was read a short document they sent me and one that ACT sent me.  That combined with ACT support line, and it rocks!  I am syncing with 3 clients (remote users).  Godaddy is only $85/month - no extra cost to add users syncing up. This has been great - far exceeded my expectations in ease of setup and functionality.  For those who are new to ACT or are less computer literate, I'm sure I would need to pay for a consultant. But, I've been using ACT off and on for 20 years.  If I had known this was going to be so easy, I wouldn't have asked for fee for service.

Re: FEE FOR SERVICE - LOADING MY ACT ONTO A REMOTE SERVER

You probably want to stay away from GoDaddy, because you're not looking for "hosting", you need "co-location". That is considerably more costly, UNLESS the company is already running an APFW server - like us.

In that event you need simpyl to Add an additional database to the APFW server and you're good to go.

To answer you're questions:

1. Changes to fields cannot be done on a local RDB file that you can sync with the hosted database, so you'll likely need Remote Desktop privileges to the server in question.

2. APFW only uses the ACT Word Processor. Word can be used with an RDB file, but browser uses will be limited.

3. It's not an expensive service for customers if the APFW server is already in place.

Feel free to contatc me at ken@keystroke.ca if you have any more questions.

We're already hosting a number of databases on our APFW server, and it responds quite well.

There are a number of ACCs (and Ken is a good example) who do hosting... you'll be MUCH better off to go with an organisation that knows ACT! and can advise you on what you really need than with a generic hosting site like Godaddy.

They can get you up-and-running much faster and with much less stress... and the good ones will be there as a partner to help if you have a problem or question.

The fact that Ken takes the time to post here and assist people should be an indication of his support ethic - something important in an organisation you want to partner with in providing your CRM needs.

Note: I have not done any business with Ken - this is an unpaid advert :-)

Re: FEE FOR SERVICE - LOADING MY ACT ONTO A REMOTE SERVER

Thanks Mike.

I communicated a few times back and forth with this ACT! customer, and was pleased to provide him counsel that actually sent him in another direction. As it turned out he was better served by an online sync server, and he explored this option independently.

I hope it works for him.
