Editing user profiles that are prior to the email requirement

Our database has been around for a while so we have users who's login is not an email address. When I attempt to edit a user it tells me the user name is invalid that it must be an email address. This is a V22 cloud DB so the edit is being attempted from the web UI. Has anyone experienced this and does it create any issues with the DB?
