Database lock

I have the option of creating an "image" back copy of my hard drive. However, I get an "sql database lock" when trying to do this back up.

I believe one can temporarily "unlock" the database - but I dont know how -- can anyone please help?

Re: Database lock

This option is under Tools, Database Maintenance and then Lock/Unlock but I am not sure this is the problem. What program are you doing this with and maybe you need to detach the database from the SQL instance. Why not just do a backup from within ACT as the functionality is already there?

Re: Database lock

Mike - thanks.

Do I type in NET STOP MSSQL$ACT7 in the "Start" "Run" box
NET START MSSQL$ACT7 in the same place.

Re: Database lock

That should work... to do it manually.

If the backup is automated, you can put the lines in .BAT files and run before and after the backup

Re: Database lock

Closing question.

I plan to do this manually -- that is, do NET STOP MSSQL$ACT7, then power down the laptop after doing the image backup.

Will MSSQL$ACT7 start automatically when the laptop is next powered up?
