Custom button to export to another database or file

Hi,

I would like to create a button/field in ACT! that will allow me to send the information from a number of company fields to another database (SQL) or create an external file (XML) with the information required that is then being imported into the other database?

Has anyone got any ideas how this could be done or know of anyone that could program this for me?

Thanks,

Mick

Hey Mick,

Will try to help. May not need a programmer. But not enough info provided. What version of ACT? Help / About

What is your target destination database? you mentioned sql. Is it another ACT! database?

If it is from one act db to another act db, you could run a lookup /query and save the query if you plan to run it on a regular basis.

You could then Use act to create a custom command(Tools/Menus Toolbars / Custom Commands) to execute that lookup/query whenever you clicked the on command.

Export that lookup data into the other act database.

ELSE;

You could run the lookup/query and export that data to csv, then into your non-act-sql-db? or act db..

ELSE,

If they are two act databases, you could create a sync set?

Just a couple of ways to use ACT! to do this without the need for programmer.

I could probably assist you remotely if you need me.

Re: Custom button to export to another database or file

Hi,

Thanks for replying. We are using ACT 2011 and what I actually want to do is have some kind of button which when selected captures some field information from the selected company record and either outputs it to an XML file or possibly some java code or some other way. I want to then use this information to start a workflow within our Windchill SQL based data management system.

The main reason is that I dont want to store the same information in multiple locations tc.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,
Mick

Will it work if you export this data to excel / csv format? instead of xml or java ?

From ACT companies or contact - list view - rite click on desired company or contact record and select export to excel.

what ever fields you have listed in your List View /colum view settings, are the fields that will get exported.

Re: Custom button to export to another database or file

What you're describing likely could be done with some programming using the ACT! SDK. I suspect the programming required would be fairly significant.

By significant do you think it is hours days or weeks of work. I know it all depends on the spec, I want to keep it fairly simple. Is this something you could do?

I don't do SDK programming but other ACCs do. It likely would be hours at a minimum of development time. Much depends if you want it as a database to database link or simply extracted to a fiel that could be imported into the other database.
