Contact Website and Web Info Tab

The Web Info tab doesn't appear to be pulling a Contact's Website if it contains http:// in the field.  When I remove the http:// from the field it works just fine, but I really don't want to change several thousand website fields.  Any ideas?

Re: Contact Website and Web Info Tab

Hello jdean,

This is a reported issue with the SP1 update for ACT! 2010. The issue is currently under investigation. The only way to resolve this issue is update the website addresses of the affected contacts to use the www.(site name) format. This can be done using an export/import via MS Excel.

- Create a new field in ACT! called Alternate Website (or whatever you choose to call it). Place the field on your layout

- Do a lookup on the Web Site field, using the "Contains" operator and the value "/". The / is what is causing the issue.

- In the resulting Contact List, make sure the Contact, Company, Web Site, E-Mail and Phone fields have been added to the view

- Click the Export to Excel icon

- In the resulting Excel spreadsheet, delete all columns except the Contact, Company, website, email, and phone fields

- Sort the list by the Web Site column, so you can verify the format

- In Excel, press Ctrl+F on the keyboard to bring up the Find/Replace box. Click the Replace tab.

- Click the Options button. Make sure that "Match entire cell contents" is unchecked

- For "Find what", type in "http://" and Replace with "www.". Click Replace All

- Manually clean up any Web Site addresses missed by the global replace.

- Save the file as .csv file and close Excel

- In ACT!, go to Tools/Preferences and click the Duplicate Checking button

- Make sure duplicate checking is enables, and use the Contact, Company, and Phone fields as the three fields to match for duplicates on. Save the changes.

- Make a backup of your ACT! database

- Go to File/Import, choose Text Delimited as the file type to import, click Browse and select the .csv file you saved. Click Next

- Choose Contact records. Click Next

- Choose Comma, leave the Yes box unchecked. Click Next

- Do not use a predefined map file. Click Next

- On the field matching, map the Web Site field to the Alternate Website field you created earlier. The rest of the fields should be appropriately mapped automatically. Click Next

- On the next screen, click Contact for the merge options. Choose Merge on the left side and Add on the right. Click OK

- Click Next, then click Finish to begin the import

- When completed, lookup the same contacts as earlier. The Alternate Website field should have values for all contacts in this lookup.

- With Lookup still in effect, go to Edit/Copy Field from the main menu

- Choose to copy the contents of the Alternate Website field to the Web Site field

- When done, test under the Web Info tab

Going forward, new contacts will need to have their websites in the www. format until the issue is resolved. To help with this, you can edit the Web Site field to have the address start with "www." for new contacts. Just type www. in the Default Value field in the edit screen for that field. This will only help with manually entered contacts, not with imported contacts.

Hey Greig, I am trying to use the Web Info tab to pull up our SharePoint site.  However our url "https://server.domain.com" does not included "www"

I've entered the url to the Web Info Tab and nothing happened... for a while.  I returned to ACT after a period of time, and for some reason it was working great.  , I'm unable to replicate the success.

Would you happen to have any suggestions or workarounds?

Re: Contact Website and Web Info Tab

Hello,

The issue with the web info tab is that it is not properly reading a URL with a "/" (forward slash) in it. So any website with a URL containing that character will not properly display. That is why "https://" will not work. At this time the only workaround is to use "www" instead of "http://" in the URL, but unfortunately if your URL cannot translate into a "www" address, we have no current solution available.

Ok, I was able to recreate the successful opening of my https:// (SharePoint Site) in the Web Info Tab

Here are the steps I took:

  1. Created "New History"
  2. In the "Attachment" field I chose "Shortcut"
  3. Navigated to a file on my SharePoint site: https://server.domain.com/folder/document.doc

  4. An ACT message popped up: "Item has already been added. Key in dictionary: 'Z:\' Key being added: 'Z:\'"
  5. I click "OK" to get out of the pop up, and "OK" again to close the "New History" window.
  6. Open the "Web Info" tab and it works.
This is great, however when you close ACT you must run through these steps again.

Re: Contact Website and Web Info Tab

I recently made the mistake of "updating" my version of ACT to: 12.1.181.0, Hot Fix 1

I now can't check my associates web portals (www.website/portal) which was a function I used to use everyday. Begs the questions:

  1. Are you still putting out an update that breaks some the functionality of the program.
  2. When is a fix going to be released? Please don't say version 2011.

I love my ACT program but I really am discouraged that this update killed a function that I really need. Seems like another hotfix should be able to cure this.

Has there been a solution to this problem? Has Sage released a fix?

I just installed Act and this is discouraging to know that this bug has not been fixed over a year now.

Re: Contact Website and Web Info Tab

Hello roweh,
Welcome to the Sage ACT! Community. This issue does not occur in ACT! 2011. I am not aware of any plans for a fix in ACT! 2010.
