Changing field character count

I need to increase the character count allowed in a field.  The original designer set it too low.

The information in that field is selected from a dropdown list

I would like to know:

What is the maximum number of characters allowed in a single field.
What is the maximum number of items allowed for a drop down selection

If the character count for an existing field (where records have data in that field), is changed. Will that data be lost.

There are just two users and we synch via the web.

Act! Version 22.1.212.0 Update 4

Windows 10

Many thanks

Re: Changing field character count

The changes to field size will need to be carried out on the hosting web server.

 would like to know:

What is the maximum number of characters allowed in a single field. 254 for character fields.
What is the maximum number of items allowed for a drop down selection Not sure but quite a lot and have never reached a limit with clients.

If the character count for an existing field (where records have data in that field), is changed. Will that data be lost. Not if increased but yes if decreased.

Re: Changing field character count

Thank you so much for a quick reply!

I think the field character count was set to about 45, which is far too small

The addition to the lists are about 10 more entrys.

Thank you again.

Re: Changing field character count

In that case you shouldn't have any problems with the small changes you intend to make.

If you mean "what is the number of items you can have in a dropdown list?", it is unlimited.

If you mean "how many items from a dropdown list can I select for a single record?", it depends on the size of your field and the number of characters of each item you select. Each item is stored in the field as is with a semi-colon as separator.

Re: Changing field character count

Hi Giles

Both

We needed to increase the number of drop down items for a custom field called "Industry Sector"

AND  we needed to know how many characters could be in the field to begin with because the number of characters for Industry Sector was far too low

Our industry sector field has102 options in the drop down list.  We need to add more to accommodate new industries and technologies.

Most Contacts would have between 2 to 3 options selected for industry

For example: A private equity backed client - Acme Windfarms

The industry sector field items selected would be Clean Tech; Energy Renew

But we couldn't add the drop down item PEbacked because those three options would now exceed the field length

The options Wind, Solar, Wave, currently not in the 102, are also required.  Hence - how many can we have in the drop down

[ Edited ]

As Giles says you can have as many items in your drop-down list as you want but where they are multi-select the size of the total number of items you then select cannot exceed field max size. The maximum field char size is 254 characters in total.

You may want to consider sub-dividing your field options with a second field and Giles has an excellent add-on to allow for this so take a moment to look at the link -
