Cannot Open ACT Remote Database ACTDiag: Database 'DATABASE NAME' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery.

Hello,

I have a user with a remote database on ACT! by Sage Premium 2009 (11.0) Version 11.1.183.0, Hotfix 1

We are unable to open the database.  Here are the errors:

When you try to log into ACT you get: The database could not be accessed.  In order to access this database, check your network connection and verify that your database server is available....

I ran ACT Diag and tried repair:

The log scan number (921:762:73) passed to log scan in database 'DATABASE NAME' is not valid. This error may indicate data corruption or that the log file (.ldf) does not match the data file (.mdf). If this error occurred during replication, re-create the publication. Otherwise, restore from backup if the problem results in a failure during startup.
An error occurred during recovery, preventing the database 'DATABASE NAME' (database ID 11) from restarting. Diagnose the recovery errors and fix them, or restore from a known good backup. If errors are not corrected or expected, contact Technical Support.
Database 'DATABASE NAME' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery. See the SQL Server errorlog for more information.
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.

Thank you for your help

Re: Cannot Open ACT Remote Database ACTDiag: Database 'DATABASE NAME' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery.

This error generally indicates a damaged database.  3 options I can think of:

1. Create a new remote

2. Attempt to reattach to SQL

3. Recreate the log file associated with database.

Note: If 2 and 3 fail, see option 1.

Very Important: The following instructions contain a step to delete the database through ACTDiag, ensure you have followed the steps to copy the database files before using the delete command.  If you cannot copy the database files, do not proceed with the delete command.

To reattach to SQL:

  1. Stop the 'SQL Server (ACT7)' service through Windows Services
  2. Copy the database files (ADF, ALF, 'database files' folder) to a safe location - you do not need the PAD file
  3. Start the 'SQL Server (ACT7) service
  4. Open ActDiag > highlight and right click on database > select Delete Database
  5. This will detach the database from SQL and delete the database files
  6. Ensure the original location no longer contains any files for the database
  7. Copy the safe copy of the ADF, ALF, and 'database files' folder into the original folder
  8. Attempt to open database using the ADF file

To recreate the log file:

  7. Copy thesafe copy of the ADF and 'database files' folder and place into the original folder (do not include ALF or PAD)
  8. Review the following article to download an updated version of ACTDiag: KB Article 27607
  9. Use instructions to Attach ACT! Database > Missing Log file
  10. Attempt to open database

Re: Cannot Open ACT Remote Database ACTDiag: Database 'DATABASE NAME' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery.

You could also try opening it by using the .adf file (normally, the file you open has a .pad extension).  So click File/Open.  Then when it brings up the search box, change the file type to .adf.  Open the file and you will see the message:  ACT! will now update the database.  Maybe that will work for you.  Brenda

Re: Cannot Open ACT Remote Database ACTDiag: Database 'DATABASE NAME' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery.

Thank you all for your help.  To save time, I ended up creating a new remote database.  The steps you outline do sounds promising though and I will try them in the future as I have seen this issue before.  Thank you
