Can't restore backup

For some unknown reason a contact has vanished from ACT 10. I decided to restore a recent backup to a new database then find the contact's details and copy them over. However when I restore the database I get the message that this database needs to be upgraded. I click OK & I get the message 'error in the application'. Have I done something wrong. If not, what's the point of a backup if you can't restore it?

Re: Can't restore backup

Use ACTDIAG and detach the database from the SQL server (if it shows up there).

Then you can delete the PAD, ALF, ADF and the supplemental files folder.

Re: Can't restore backup

How old was your backup?

Is it possible the application has been updated to 10.03 and your backup file is from 10.02 or earlier?

And did you select the "Restore As" option?

Re: Can't restore backup

Yes, it was a 10.02 database I was trying to restore to ACT v10.03 but surely that is the point of backing it up prior to upgrading the database to 10.0.3.

Yes I did use the restore as...If I hadn't would the database have been restored correctly over the current version?

Meanwhile the contact data I was looking for has reappeared after I changed some details for the missing contact on a Palm I sync to.

Where were your questions leading?

Thanks,

Re: Can't restore backup

As a thought... you should do a Backup and then Restore | Restore_As to a different name to ensure the backup isn't having any problems.

I recommend users do a test restore every couple of months to  ensure it's all working... nothing worse than finding the backup wasn't working when it's too late

Re: Can't restore backup

What I now have is 2, maybe 3 databases "restored" with new names which I can't open & thus can't remove. Meanwhile the contact I had lost reappeared and I suspect had vanished through use of either a Durkin add-on or Companionlink sync software. By changing the some contact details on my Palm Treo and syncing with my database I restored the lost contact in full.

I'd still like to remove the obsolete databases though.

Cheers

Stephen

Re: Can't restore backup

Hey Mike,

Thanks - However since I can't open the database I also can't delete it.

What happens if I just delete the *.pad file and related folders?

Regards,

Stephen

Re: Can't restore backup

Thanks Mike,

This gets rid of the unwanted databases but I'm still confused about the point of backing up a database prior to a version upgrade eg 10.0.2 to 10.0.3 and then not being able to restore the backup to the new version.

Regards,

Stephen

Re: Can't restore backup

In case something goes wrong with the update, you can still go back, fix the problem and try again
