I am using ACT! 2008 Premium on a microsoft network environment. Others in my work group can associate a group or company to an activity such as a call, but I can not. Can anyone help me shed light on why this is occuring on my unit - it may also be occuring on other's as well.

What happens when you click on the button? Is it grayed out? Open the demo database on the machine with the issue to see if you can associate a group with an activity.
Try rebuilding your preferences.
