Can Sage ACT 2011 Database be used on Sage ACT 2012 ?  Is it possible to Save and transfer 2011 Database to another computer?  When I did this I ended SQL in order to save database on a external drive.. then when transferred to another computer with SAGe ACt 2012 it will not open.. ERROR message: "the SQL Database service is not started.

Anyone out there have experience with this?

thank you!

Re: Can 2011 Database be used on 2012 ? Save and transfer to another computer?

I'll take the second part first. To copy the ADF and ALF files you would need to stop the SQL server first.

In the 2011 premium version you need to save a copy of the database as a pro version. There isn't any way to directly backup the pro version on the premium machine but there is a trick. Start to open the pro version on the permium system. It will tell you it needs to be updated to the premium version and as if you want to make a backup. Answer Yes and it will make a backup of the pro version. Then cancel the conversion and copy the backup file to the 2012 pro system and you should be able to do a Restore As.

One point ... you won't be able to move the database back to ACT! 2011

As to the error ... can you open a database on the ACT! 2012 machine?

The best way to transfer a database is to use File | Backup
Move the ZIP file to the other computer and
File | Restore | Restore As

Try opening the database with the ADF file.

GL:  would work except 2011 is premium and 2012 is PRO. Now when I try to restore it stated that I needed to save as pro.. then when I try to open as pro(to backup) wont let me becuase is on premium machine,.. AHHHHHH this is ridiculous.

Roy:  open as ALF on the newer 2012 PRO?  how do I get that ALF file to save  and transfer!! when I try.. tells me error becuase file is riunning in SQL server.  do I have any hair left!!!!

I'm going to ask this...Have you uninstalled and deleted the original 2011 program and data?

There are knowledge base articles for moving your database from one computer to another.  Checkout 28235 and 19211.  That ought to get you started.
