Ah ! I, too, did not have this problem using ACT 2009 - even when importing directly from an Excel .csv file.
The problem has only arisen since my upgrade to Act Premium 2010 version 12.
You might want to think twice about upgrading till this is fixed, unless you want to tediously de-dupe as I currently have to.

I find your note a little confusing, saying it will only update all fields. When I go to the knowledge database link you have provided, it says you can select "merge." I have a large excel sheet of names to bring in and I know there will be duplicates but the spreadsheet (which I will convert to txt) has the latest. If I do merge them, and it actually replaces, will I lose earlier history or notes?
