I am trying to run a query as follows:
Equal to = consultant1 or
Equal to = consultant2 or
Equal to = consultant3 and
Equal to = client and
Equal to = B
I keep getting various results in the "client" field and require 'client' only??? Why would this be?

You don't indicate that you grouped the OR statements.

I have just checked an no I haven't grouped the OR statements. If I place a parenthesis around all consultants, the query still generates a list of 200 results with mixed ratings ie. 'client', 'personal', 'deceased' etc.

I would try
(Equal to = client and Equal to = B) and
(Equal to = consultant1 or Equal to = consultant2 or Equal to = consultant3)
It really is about getting the brackets in the right order
