I was wondering what the "Activities" column option is in the Contact-List View table of columns/fields that can be added to the view. I put it in my list of columns thinking it might show any activities I have scheduled for contacts; but, it does not seem to populate. what kind of activity does this column report?

Are you referring to the Customise Columns window, opened from the contacts list view, as per the screenshot below?:
Any available field named "Activities" is not a default field and will most likely be a custom field that has been created on your database. This will show any data entered into the field wherever it may have been placed on the contact detail view.
