I would like to add the user name to the main contact sceen when a user updates a particular field. I added a new field for date called, and would like to automatically fill a field of the person that updated that date. (I know of the last called field, but as far as I know that is only updated when a call scheduled on the calendar is made. It is not practical for us to schedule every cal). Any help would be appreciated.

There is a last edited by field which you could move to the top.
Even though you don't schedule every call (who does) i would sugest that your users do a record history (CTR+H) to record significant business conversations on every call.
