We are soon to go live with APFW to replace the desktop version...
The only downside we see to the web version is loading notes and history is very slow to load. Also when contacts are switched if the user was on the history tab the whole page is very slow.
Our Web server just hosts APFW and API it has 16gb of ram. We have about 15,000 contacts and the total db size is about 1.5gb.
Is there anything that can be done to remedy this... we have already purged history/notes over 2 years old.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

How slow are we talking here? Could you give us an average time in seconds when changing contact with history tab open, and when loading the tab initially?
What version of Act! Premium for Web is installed?
What web browser is being used in this case?

on average maybe 1-2 seconds delay on opening tab, switching contact with tab open is maybe 4-5 seconds delay.
Everything else is less than a second, except initial log in.
The PC's are connected directly through a gigabit switch.
