ACT! v17 in WIndows 10 crashes when trying to create custom menu

I am using ACT! for my small business since 1993! Had no choice but to upgrade to ACT Pro v17 because of our Windows server upgrade. That caused us to loose all of our custom menu and commands. While trying to re-create them we found that ACT! crashes out everytime we are clicking "add command". That is in WIndows 10 and I tried on 3 different Windows 10 machines. Also tried on Windows 10 laptop. Same problem.

Since all our machines are not running Windows10 WE NEED A SOLUTION! It is seriously impacting our workflow.

The only workaround we will be attemtping is to install ACT! on an older Windows 7 or 8 machine, create the menues and then  move the "connectedbars170" (NO, not 150 or whatever it states on the knowledge base) to the other machines. It's a lot of work as we have to map the correct network paths for files, queries and templates to consider.

What a hassle. Is this once great software falling apart? Hope not. Any ideas anyone?

WORKAROUND for ACT! v17 on Windows10; crashing when creating custom commands

Hello,

in case somebody needs this info, here is a workaround. The problem is that while creating custom commands in ACT!v17 on Windows10, Act will crash out. I tested that on several machines.

Solution:

Create your custom commands and or custom menues on a Windows 8.1 machine. (I actually used our Windows Server Essentials machine). Then transfer the connectedbars170.ser (or similiar, see article "how to transfer custom commands to other machines")

to the Windows10 machines. Works fine for me.

Re: ACT! v17 in WIndows 10 crashes when trying to create custom menu

Hi metalco,

Can you please tell us what version of Windows you are running on your other machines? Currently Act! V 17 is not compatible with Windows 10 but our Development team is working very hard on getting this resolved. To see a list of known issues between Act! V17 and Windows 10 please view the article below.

Thank you,
Brittany Roberts

Re: ACT! v17 in WIndows 10 crashes when trying to create custom menu

Hello Brittany:

Thank You for responding. We are running the latest version of Windows10 Pro. What is upsetting is that your sales staff told us that ACT! v17 IS COMPATIBLE with Windows10. Hence we purchased the upgrades for an substantial amount for our office.

Yes, of course I reviewed the known issues as you mentioned. This issue is not listed. I hope you can list that as well and I surely hope your developers can get ACT! v17 to acceptable standards and compatibility with Windows10, a current main stream operating system. I am a bit befuddelt that that hasn't happened yet. After all, Windows10 is available to developers quiet some time.

In the meantime, after 21 years having loved ACT! (yes we consider ourselves experts when it comes to ACT) we are for the first time very unhappy with where the product is going.

Sincerely

Re: ACT! v17 in WIndows 10

I read somewhere from Swiftpage KBs that if ""a clean install Windows 10""" aka.. a new preinstalled W 10 computer"" and

a "clean installed W 10" ( all partitions from W8 deleted") and then install W10 from the USB stick or burnt Dvd iso) then

Act! is normally working.

I have downloaded (not yet upgraded) W10 on a USB/DVD as ISO file, which I am going to use,

if if...

PLEASE SWIFTPAGE TELL US IF BOTH ARE RIGHT !

Thanks

William

Re: ACT! v17 in WIndows 10

Thank You for the feedback. I tried that. One computer was wiped completely clean and a completely clean install of W 10. Still same problem. I will try this work around:

Create the menues and custom commands on a Windows7 or Windows 8 machine. Make sure that the database drive is mapped same as on our office network. After creating the custom menues copy the the connectedbars file to our current machines.

Swiftpage, any feedback on that idea? Spending a lot of time I didn't expect.?

Hi Metalco,

Thanks for updating this thread with your discovered workaround. I have forwarded this defect to our senior technicians to investigate further.

Thanks again.

Re: ACT! v17 in WIndows 10 crashes when trying to create custom menu

I discovered this exact problem when setting up a new machine after a hard drive crash. I was told by Act Sales that it was compatible but Act 18 coming out in December would resolve it and other issues. This was definitely a ploy to induce me to buy 17. This needs to get fixed.

I don't have the luxury of any older windows versions to employ this workaround. I need another solution ASAP.

Thanks.

[ Edited ]

Firstly, ensure you are completely up to date as this has been reported as fixed in the most recent hotfix for v17.

If the problem persists, a workaround from an older version would be worth trying:

Do not click browse on the command line field, instead enter the path either manually, or copy/pasting it from an explorer path.

If the issue still occurs at the point where you click add command, then this is a separate issue that we'll continue investigating. Please also include the error message or exact behaviour after clicking the button.
