ACT! Premium Error Messages

I have 2 errors that I need help resolving on ACT! 2007 Premium for Workgroups:
 
1) "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" keeps popping up whenever I enter in a new note or history. This hasn't happened before, but it happens a lot lately
 
2) Once in a while, whenever I click on an existing note or history, the window that opens has a "sort" that runs through the contact space (it goes through all the contacts in the database) and nothing can be changed for the note/history after it stops.
 
I appreciate any advice that anyone can offer me.

Thank you so much. If I have multiple databases, do I need to do this for each one? When I make my backups before deleting the preference files, do I need to make sure to backup personal files? The knowledgebase answer is written for 05 and 06 but I'm assuming it works for 07 and 08 (haven't updated the kb yet?)
