ACT Premium 10.0 - Synchronize between two databases

Hi,... I was hoping someone could help me out. We're a small office who have been using ACT for years. We had upgraded to 10.0 for Vista compatibility awhile ago and I never got around to syncing our databases (since we upgraded to 10.0). I looked into it yesterday and from what I can figure, the only way to sync is to start off with one 'main' database and create remote databases that sync with the main one. The problem is that I've now got two different databases that need to be synced before I can setup the remote databases. In the older versions of ACT, I was able to simply sync between two databases (point ACT to the location of another database and sync - that simple), but I can't seem to find any such way of doing this with 10.0. Does anyone know of a way to sync these two databases (they're essentially the same database - same fields and layout - we've just added/edited contacts and notes separately on each database)?

Any suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks

What was your previous ACT! database version? Can I guess it was Version 6 or older?

Bottom line with the new SQL database format (V2005 and later) is you can only sync an RDB database with the host database.

You can try and create an RDB file and them attempt to "import" the old data into it before attempting to synch it with the host, but the best case scenario with that approach is likely a whole lot of duplicates.

Yup,... it was version 6. The problem is that now we've entered a pile more info into the new databases, so using the old version 6 database isn't really an option anymore.

I can't believe that syncing two databases isn't an option in this new version! Wow... what a PoS software package! Looks like we're pretty much screwed then...

With all due respect, I can tell you from my experience as the ACT! technical Support for ACT! 3-6 synchronization specialist, the ability to synchronization two database as you want to do should never have been made possible and anybody that tried doing so risked destroying both databases. Fortunately much was learned about what was required for synchronization and the serious flaws with ACT! 3-6 synchronization were not carried forward into ACT! 7 and later.

Re: ACT Premium 10.0 - Synchronize between two databases

I understand Roy,... but unfortunately over the years we had gotten in the routine of syncronizing our ACT! databases that way. Now we're in a pinch because I didn't realize that version 10.0 can't be synced like that. I know with the earlier versions of ACT!, we sometimes had weird things happen to the data after syncing (eg; stuff being put in the wrong fields).

You may be able to get all the data into one database using import though import works at the record level, not the field level, so you need to be careful how you set you the import parameters. And of course, do safety backups.

Re: ACT Premium 10.0 - Synchronize between two databases

Okay... I need some serious help here now...

I've got THREE different databases that need to be synchronized now. I was never able to get the original two synchronized, and now we've got a third user who's data needs to be synchronized with the other two databases as well.

I've wasted a TON of time trying to export from one database and import to the other - without much success. The biggest issue is that I need to retain the notes - which exporting doesn't allow.

Is my only option to have someone take all three databases and convert them back to ACT 6.0, sync them (like we used to), convert the newly synchronized database to 10.0 and then set up the whole syncronization process correctly?

Do I have any other options? Is there someone that offers a service that could help us out?
