ACT Indexes taking large amount of space

[ Edited ]

Hello all,

My  company recently upgraded from ACT 4.0 to ACT 18 and our IT guy has noticed that the ACT Indexes are taking large amounts of space on our server. Just over the past night it jumped from 26GB to 36GB on our (C:/) which currently only has 80GB of storage. How can I go about changing the index location from this drive to our new 4TB external as well as reducing the amount of space currently being taken up? I've tried calling ACT support but have been on hold for over 30+ minutes waiting for assistance.

-Josh

Re: ACT Indexes taking large amount of space

Hi Josh,

The reason the indexes are so large, is due to the amount of attachments in the database. Act will index all these attachments, and will increase the size of the index files by the amount of storage taken by the attachments.
If you do not use the universal search feature (which is what these indexes are being used for), it can be disabled, and the index files can be deleted.

Re: ACT Indexes taking large amount of space

Do I have to stop Act Service Host and ACT Smart Task Service Host to delete this folder?

I would recommend stopping the services. The Smart Task service shouldn't matter, but there's no harm in stopping it.

Re: ACT Indexes taking large amount of space

Thank you so much for your reply. I deleted the folder and as soon as I restarted services, it came back and started growing again. It's up to 26 gb. It was at 4gb when the folder recreated itself. Can you tell me how to turn off the universal search feature? We don't use it and I think that's my best bet.

Thanks again!

Re: ACT Indexes taking large amount of space

You can disable the service that runs the Universal Search. If you run services.msc and right click ACT! Service Host > Properties > Set Startup Type to Disabled.

Alternatively, you can also change the location of the index files to another location with more storage space. The following Knowledgebase article details this: http://kb.act.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/28454
