ACT 2011 Premium - tempdb.mdf file size increased overnight

We are running ACT 2011 premium and I noticed that the tempdb.mdf file located in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.ACT7\MSSQL\DATA directory has increased in size from 15 MB to 13 GB.

What is this file used for ? Can we decrease the file size ?

I am thinking we might need to do some Database Maintenance that might compress this file but not sure how to go about it.

I would strongly suggest not compressing a primary SQL database file.  It uses that file all the time.  Your system would simply decompress it immediately, and then you can't be sure the data in there isn't corrupt.  That file is used for temporary transactions and should drop itself down eventually.  If you find that it stays where it is, I would make backups of your databases, stop SQL, and remove the file.  it should recreate itself when sql is started.

Does your database synchronize with any other service or database?  If so, valuable data could be lost.
