Discussed with the admin yesterday. We have to operate on several assumptions, but where we boil it down to is that obviously someone, him or otherwise, had to have logged in with that account. Pulled up those 280 specific contacts, hit delete- accidental or otherwise, and then confirm the delete.
Assuming those things did happen, we still cannot create any lookup that even remotely touches those specific 280 contacts. Not saying it's impossible, but nearly so to re-create this.
So we decided to just change the admin's PW and call it 'the unsolvable crime'.
Not knowing for certain exactly what happened really makes me twitch :/ But I give up.

Don't get hung up on how the lookup was created. Specific queries aren't the only way to create a lookup. The easiest way the create a lookup of random contacts is to first do a lookup all and than in the contact list view tag the contacts you're interested in and than use the option to lookup tagged which will create a lookup of the contact records you tagged.
