If your looking to report on cleared Activities than you should be querying the History data tables. Activities are for scheduled tasks that have not been completed as yet. Histories store the tasks that have been held e.g. Sales Person scheduled a meeting with a prospect company for the 24th September 2010 and held that meeting. Afterwarsd the sales rep cleared the meeting from his tasklist. This cleared meeting would now be stored in the Histories tables.
However if you are looking to report on what the salesperson has scheduled for the next month or for the rest of this month than the Activities table would be the way to go.
Finally, it might be an idea to use the Views rather than manually carrying out all the Joins etc. The History view already contains the relevant joins for the Activity Types and History tyoes and Company etc and could be easier to deal with.
I hope all that makes some sense to you!
