Is there an event that fires when a new record is created

I know I'm just missing this but I"m hoping someone can nudge me (a full fledged push would be welcome as well) in the right direction.

I've been trying to find an event that will fire when a new record (contact/group/company/opportunity) is created.  I have been able to find one that fires when the new record is saved, but not when it is first created.
