I need to be about to do read only lookups on Customer Leads

I am using ACT for the first time.  I need to be able to perform Select operations on Customer Leads for my ASP.NET 2.0 website (programmed in c#).  I have the following questions (sorry if they seem silly, as I said I am brand new to this):

1. What version of ACT do I need to be running in order to perform these lookups?  My company is currently running ACT 2006 for workgroups?  We are willing to upgrade if necessary.

2. Is there any documentation on how to perform these lookups?

3. Is there an API that I would call to do these lookups or can I get the database connection string?

4. Is there sample code that I can use to perform these lookups?

Basically I am just getting started. I need all the help/guidance I can get.

Thanks

Download a copy of the SDK. http://www.act.com/partners/addonpartners/sdk/index.cfm

2006 should work fine.

There is read only oledb provider that will get you access to some of the fields in ACT.  You cannot connect directly to the ACT7 SQL instance with root without paying.
