Difference between building a company first or contact person?

In our company we always build a new company and then we add the contact persons to the company. But I have heard that it should be done other way around. Do you know what is the difference? And should we change our contacts to be like that and is it worth it?

I guess the only reason to create the contact first is the ability to create a company from a contact, so you don't have to enter the adress twice because the data is taken from the contact and used to create the company
