Does anyone know how to get a report out showing the actual no of phone calls made by a sales agent in a day? The activity report does not seem to show this data.
I would like to incorporate this into a dashboard for daily contact targets.

Have you tried looking at the History Summary Classic report? It has columns for 'Calls Attempted' and 'Calls Completed'.
For the Dashboard, look at the Default Dashboard and see if the Activities by User portion will suffice. You can set it to include 'Cleared Activities' so that you can set the date range (as an example) for 'Last Month' and it will display the total calls.
